International students staying connected together on a UK university campus
A good place to beginCoverage before gigabytes

Test the places that shape your day: accommodation, campus, commute, workplace and regular train route.

Start the guide ↓
01

Use Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile and each provider’s own checker for your accommodation and campus.

02

A one-month SIM can be a safer first choice while a new student learns their UK data use and local signal.

03

International calls from the UK and roaming while abroad are different charges—check both country lists.

01 / Coverage before gigabytes

Make the first SIM easy to leave.

Your first UK network does not need to be your forever network. Flexibility is useful while everything else is changing.

Use Wi-Fi to compare

Before leaving airport or campus Wi-Fi, check coverage at your actual address and read the plan’s UK, roaming and international-calling terms.

Start flexible when unsure

A one-month or pay-as-you-go plan can reduce risk while you test reception, data use and customer support. Longer contracts may cost less per month but are harder to leave.

Check phone compatibility

Make sure the phone is unlocked, supports the provider’s 4G and 5G bands and can use 4G Calling. UK 3G switch-offs mean an old 3G-only device may no longer work properly.

02 / Coverage before gigabytes

Compare signal in real student places.

Population coverage claims do not tell you how a basement room, concrete hall or rural train route will behave.

Check five locations

Test your home, lecture buildings, library, part-time workplace and regular journey. Look at indoor as well as outdoor predictions.

Know the network family

giffgaff and Tesco Mobile use O2. SMARTY is owned by Three. VOXI sits within VodafoneThree. Network sharing between Vodafone and Three is rolling out, but maps are not automatically identical everywhere.

Ask students nearby

Coverage tools are predictions. Ask flatmates and coursemates to run a speed test in the exact buildings you use, especially before a long contract.

03 / Coverage before gigabytes

Buy the data you use—not the word unlimited.

Campus and home Wi-Fi reduce mobile use, while tethering a laptop or streaming on commutes increases it quickly.

Check your current phone

Open mobile-data settings and look at a normal month. Reset the counter if it has been collecting for longer than one billing cycle.

Read fair-use terms

Unlimited plans can still contain rules for roaming, tethering, personal use or speed. A large fixed allowance may be clearer and cheaper.

Leave room for arrival month

Your first month may use extra data for maps, housing calls, banking and hotspot backup before broadband is live.

04 / Coverage before gigabytes

Separate international calls from roaming.

A cheap call home from the UK does not guarantee cheap mobile use when you travel, and inclusive EU roaming can have a separate data cap.

Calling another country

Check whether your exact destination and mobile or landline type is included. Internet calling apps normally use data instead of international minutes.

Using the SIM abroad

Open the roaming country list, daily charge, included allowance and fair-use cap before every trip. Do not rely on an old screenshot or a friend’s plan.

Keep the home-country number safely

Dual-SIM or eSIM can keep a home number available for messages, but roaming charges can still apply. Turn off data roaming on the line you do not want to use.

05 / Coverage before gigabytes

Keep your UK number when you switch.

You can move a number without negotiating on the phone.

PAC keeps the number

Text PAC to 65075 from the old SIM, then give the code to the new provider. Check the provider’s timing instructions before choosing the transfer day.

STAC ends the old number

Use a STAC when you want to switch provider without keeping the old number. Keep access to important accounts before allowing a number to close.

Update security accounts

After a change, check university login, banking, NHS, job applications and two-factor authentication. Never give a PAC, STAC or one-time code to an unexpected caller.

Logos identify providers and do not imply endorsement. ‘Flexible’ means a short or rolling option exists; always confirm notice, auto-renewal and the price after any promotional period.
