Most providers ask for identity evidence and some form of address evidence, but the exact list varies.
Banking without the fog.
Build a UK money setup that lets you receive funds, pay rent and move through daily life without losing track of fees or security.
Identity, address evidence, phone access and a safe comparison plan.
Start the guide ↓Compare foreign-currency charges, cash access, overdraft costs and branch support—not only welcome offers.
Never move money because of an unexpected call or message claiming your account is at risk.
Prepare before you apply.
A clean first application is better than several rushed ones. Put your documents and contact details in order first.
Identity
Keep your passport and immigration-status evidence available. Online applications may ask for a live photo or video identity check.
UK address
Check what the provider accepts. A tenancy agreement, university letter, bank statement or utility document may help, depending on the bank.
Working phone
You will often need a UK or accessible mobile number for verification codes, app activation and fraud alerts.
Compare the whole account.
The best account is the one that fits how you actually receive, hold and spend money—not the one with the loudest promotion.
Everyday access
Check mobile-app quality, cash withdrawal options, branch or Post Office access and how quickly a replacement card can arrive.
International use
Review exchange-rate mark-ups, overseas cash-machine charges and fees for receiving or sending international transfers.
Borrowing cost
An overdraft is borrowing. Check the interest rate, limit and what happens if a payment would take you beyond it.
Set your safety protocol.
Your bank will give you security tools. Use them before anything goes wrong, not after.
Freeze fast
Learn where the card-freeze control and fraud-reporting number are before your first journey or night out.
Verify independently
If someone contacts you about an urgent transfer, end the conversation and contact the organisation using a trusted number or app.
Check the firm
Use the FCA Firm Checker when considering a regulated financial service. Clone firms can copy genuine names and branding.
Our recommended everyday account for app-first budgeting.
StudentStart recommends considering Monzo if you value spending notifications, budgeting Pots and quick card controls. Compare its eligibility, charges and support with other accounts before choosing.
This is an editorial recommendation, not a paid placement or personal referral. The button goes to Monzo’s official current-account page and StudentStart receives no reward or commission from it.
Monzo Personal Account
Recommended for clear, app-first everyday budgeting
- Best for
- Students who want strong app budgeting, instant spending notifications, Pots for rent and bills, digital-wallet access and quick card freezing.
- To unlock it
- Open Monzo’s official current-account page, check the current eligibility information and compare the complete account with the alternatives in this guide before applying.
- Watch for
- This is not a dedicated student account. Check current eligibility, cash-deposit and withdrawal arrangements, overdraft costs, international-use charges and the support available to you.
Student accounts that give something back.
These are real examples with the qualifying steps beside the headline. Pick the account that works after the welcome gift has gone.
Cash, vouchers and prize draws are promotions, not guaranteed approval. Many accounts require UK residency history or a UCAS code, so newly arrived international students should check eligibility before applying. Do not assume two offers can be combined.
Nationwide FlexStudent
£100 cash + £120 in monthly Just Eat vouchers
- Best for
- A first-year student who can use the account actively and claim each monthly voucher.
- To unlock it
- Open from 15 July 2026, pay in £500 and make 5 eligible debit-card payments by 11 December 2026.
- Watch for
- The account page says applicants must be UK residents with at least 3 years in the UK. Monthly vouchers expire if not claimed.
Lloyds Student Account
£100 cash + up to £120 in Deliveroo vouchers
- Best for
- A student who expects to make at least 20 valid debit transactions in the qualifying months.
- To unlock it
- Open or change to the account and pay in £500 by 30 October 2026. The voucher stage runs from November to April.
- Watch for
- Past Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland student/graduate accounts can exclude you. Vouchers require 20 eligible transactions each month.
NatWest Student Account
£100 cash + a 4-year tastecard
- Best for
- An eligible student who would genuinely use dining, cinema and day-out discounts.
- To unlock it
- Open an eligible Student account and complete the bank's offer steps. NatWest asks for a 16-digit UCAS status code.
- Watch for
- You are excluded if you received a NatWest student offer from 1 July 2022. The bank says availability is limited and can be withdrawn.
Santander Edge Student
Free 4-year 16–25 Railcard + entry to a cash prize draw
- Best for
- A student who will use rail regularly; the Railcard benefit is certain if eligible, the cash prize is not.
- To unlock it
- Open or transfer to the account from 14 July to 16 October 2026 and make eligible debit-card purchases for prize-draw entries.
- Watch for
- This is not guaranteed cash. Course, residency and regular pay-in rules apply; second-year students may need to switch an account.
Cash for switching—not simply signing up.
These live examples use the Current Account Switch Service. A full switch normally closes the old account and moves its regular payments.
Only switch if the new account suits you. Download statements first, protect access to salary or student-finance payments and read the provider's live terms immediately before applying—offers can end without much notice.
first direct 1st Account
£210 cash
- Best for
- A completely new first direct customer who can complete all switching, deposit, spending and digital-banking steps within 45 days.
- To unlock it
- Open the account between 14 September and 2 December 2026, complete a full switch with at least 2 Direct Debits or standing orders, pay in £1,000, make at least 5 debit-card payments and log in to digital banking within 45 days.
- Watch for
- Not available if you previously held a first direct product, or opened an HSBC current account on or after 1 January 2018. UK residency and account eligibility apply; the offer can be withdrawn.
Lloyds Club Lloyds accounts
£200 cash
- Best for
- Someone who can move at least 3 active Direct Debits and whose chosen qualifying Lloyds account remains worthwhile after any monthly fee.
- To unlock it
- Open a new qualifying Club Lloyds, Club Lloyds Silver, Club Lloyds Platinum or Premier account and start a full switch by 9 December 2026 with at least 3 active Direct Debits.
- Watch for
- Student, Classic and basic accounts do not qualify. Monthly fees can apply, and previous Lloyds Banking Group switch rewards since 1 January 2023 can exclude you.
HSBC Bank Account
£220 cash
- Best for
- A new HSBC customer who can meet the higher pay-in and spending steps within 60 days.
- To unlock it
- Apply in the app, complete a full switch with 2 Direct Debits, pay in £2,000 and spend £500 on the debit card within 60 days.
- Watch for
- Not for existing HSBC/first direct customers or people who held either current account since 1 January 2023. Sole app applications only.
NatWest Select or Reward
£200 cash
- Best for
- Someone who did not hold a NatWest current account on 6 May 2026 and can use the mobile app.
- To unlock it
- Complete a full switch, pay in £1,250 and leave it for 24 hours, then log in to the app within 60 days.
- Watch for
- Previous NatWest Group switch cash, or switching from RBS or Ulster Bank, can exclude you. Reward accounts may have monthly fees.
Nationwide current accounts
£175 cash
- Best for
- Someone moving 2 active Direct Debits into an eligible Flex account.
- To unlock it
- Complete a full switch within 28 days, then pay in £1,000 and make 1 eligible debit-card payment within 31 days.
- Watch for
- The old account is closed by a full switch. Virgin Money and Nationwide accounts cannot be the source. Nationwide says a customer may qualify once on a first eligible sole account and once on a first eligible joint account, subject to the full terms.
Compare the cost of moving money across borders.
These services can be useful alongside a UK current account when you receive money from home, exchange currencies or travel. Compare the final amount received, not only the advertised fee.
This is general information, not financial advice. Eligibility, safeguarding or deposit protection, exchange rates and fees differ by product. If StudentStart later activates an approved affiliate link, the card will be labelled Ad · Partner link beside the button.
Wise
Hold, receive, spend and convert supported currencies with fees shown before a transfer.
- Best for
- Students who need to compare cross-border transfers or spending in more than one currency.
- To unlock it
- Check whether your currencies and route are supported, then compare the live fee, exchange rate and amount the recipient gets.
- Watch for
- A Wise account is not the same as a traditional UK student bank account. Product availability, verification and protections vary by location and service.
Revolut
App-based spending, transfers and currency features across free and paid plans.
- Best for
- Students comparing an app-first account with international spending or transfer tools.
- To unlock it
- Compare the Standard plan first, then check identity requirements, exchange limits, weekend pricing and any paid-plan renewal before opening.
- Watch for
- Do not treat a temporary trial or joining offer as permanent value. The exact offer, eligibility, plan fee and restrictions must match the landing page you use.
